David Chipperfield kept some amazing war damaged walls in his restoration of the Neues Museum in Berlin. The gesture is an awesome sight (from what I can tell from the New York Times article) especially with the clean white stairs in intense contrast. Unfortunately a trip to Berlin may have to wait.
